[ maelstrom.] The world the story happens in is called Maelstrom. The reason behind its name is because the rumoured shape that Maelstrom takes. From ancient myths, it is said that the main continents clusters at the stationary center of a giant, calm whirlpool that spins slowly. This whirlpool spreads over such a large area, that to the people of Maelstrom, it's just an ocean that they cannot cross. However this is just an unproven myth; not too many people believes in it.
As much as well-researched scholars have hypothesized, Maelstrom contains 3 parallel dimensions/planes: Overworld, Mortal Realms, and the Underworld. Refer to the Races section for details of each plane's inhabitants.
[ mortal boundary.] In certain myths and legends they have heard of the existence of higher-order civilizations--Immortals--in a distant land within Mortal Realms beyond their exploration. In hope of meeting these Immortals and perhaps even gain more knowledge about supernatural powers, Mortals have ventured countless times outside the boundary of the world they know. However, for the past many centuries, none succeeded and returned. Eventually they gave up and stayed within this boundary, and called it the Mortal Boundaries.
[ believes.] It is a given fact that Deities and Demons
do exist in this story. Since only those that can use magical powers would understand the existence
of these invisible spirits in the world, some commonners just don't believe in their
existence. Demon magic is easier to use than Sacred magic, and therefore is more well-accepted and called "common magic".
Thus the existence of demonic spirits is more convincing than the existence of
Holy Spirits, because only faithful followers of the Overworld church can experience the
existence of Holy Spirits, and only church members know that the bible is not a
joke they have created to fool the world (since it appears to be a blank book to
anybody but cleric members). a lot of people even think that the church is a lie
to the world
to gain control of their minds.
However some of these people still try to believe in this religion, because they fear the
things that may happen to them in their afterlife. Few people worships the spiritual beings of the Underworld.
[ countries.] Within the Mortal realms, countries are spread on the main continents that humans live in. Between each
country is a great framework of large spikes of black crystals from the ground,
or sometimes in addition to the great walls. These crystals serve as a
declaration of the country boundaries, and sometimes war-time protection with
their magical properties. Underneath each country, at some hidden location,
there is also a chamber where a large chunk of this crystal is kept alive, and
they are called the heart of the country because of the special properties they
have. Each country has its King and Queen, and heir to the throne is chosen by them. They rule primarily over their capital cities and leave smaller cities to the rule of aristocrats.
In the beginning of the story, despite obvious power-differences, most countries are in negotiated peace. The single largest, most powerful--in both wealth and military power--country in
these continents is Rochvell.
The country where Veloce lives is Kronzel.
The use of common magic (Demon magic) is prohibited in all
countries.
Other races, such as the Beast-Humans, live in small groups/clans scattered around the continent. None of them have established city-states. Within certain countries, these scattered settlements are not welcomed and are hunted down.
